Cellular phone batteries, battery chargers and adapters are available
for virtually all cell phones of recent manufacture. In many cases,
these items are specific to particular cell phone models, and it may be
difficult to find cell phone batteries that are designed for your
phone. Another main concern is maximizing battery life. Here
are a few simple pointers that may help you do both.
NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries are less expensive than some other types of batteries,
but like NiCad batteries, they are slowly becoming obsolete. They must be completely discharged
and recharged every so often to maintain optimal capacity. Along with NiCad batteries, NiMH
batteries have largely been replaced by Li-Ion (Lithium Ion) batteries.
These batteries are lighter and thinner than NiMH and NiCad batteries;
Lithium Ion batteries also have a longer lifetime, and they do not have to be totally discharged
to maintain optimal capacity. They are, however, more expensive than their predecessors.
Li-Polymer (Lithium Polymer) technology is even more advanced than Lithium Ion technology;
it makes thinner and lighter batteries possible, but Lithium Polymer batteries are still quite rare.
Modern smartphones are usually powered by rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries.
Regardless of the type of battery you purchase for your cell phone, there
are several things you can do to extend the standby time and talk time
between charges. You can eliminate the sound the phone makes when
you press a key by adjusting your phone's settings. Whenever
possible, use a ring tone instead of vibration mode, because ring tones
use a lot less energy. You can also adjust the backlight timeout
(the amount of time the backlight stays on) to reduce the amount of energy
drained through this application. If your phone features both
digital and analog communications, you can turn off your phone when
traveling through an analog area where you will not need to use it.
The analog system is much tougher on cell phone batteries, in some cases
reducing standby time from as much as 200 hours to as few as
30 hours! Also, be sure to keep your cell phone (and its battery)
away from intense heat. Placing your phone on the dashboard of your
car in the midday sun can severely shorten the battery's life expectancy.
